Beilun is located in the middle part of the Chinese coast line, east of Ningbo City, next to East China Sea, and embraced by water in three sides, with Hangzhou Bay to its north, and Xiangshan harbor to its south. Beilun Area used to be part of Zhenhai County of Ningbo. Beilun Area was establsihed in 1984 when Zhenhai county was revoked and became a district of Ningbo. It covers a land area of 593 square kilometers, including “The Crown of Chinese Sea Ports”----Beilun Port, as well as national level development zones like Ningbo Economic & Technical Development Zone, Ningbo Free Trade Zone, Ningbo Export Processing Zone and Daxie Economic & Technical Development Zone developed independently by CITIC, China. Beilun Area has a total permanent residents of 325,700 , and 232,000 temporary population. After 21 years' efforts, Beilun New Year has achieved great improvement in construction and development. A new coastal city proper with prosperous economy, advanced social order, complete infrastructures has been built on the shoal in the past days. Beilun Area has grown to a focused area in Ningbo with great economic development potentiality and foreign capital utilization. At the same time, it becomes one of the most important foreign-oriented manufacturing bases and open-up windows in Zhejiang Province, especially with Ningbo Economic & Technical Development Zone, which is among the state level development zones in China with the best overall investment environment.

In 2005, GDP in Beilun reached 27.4 billion R.M.B. Yuan, increased by 15.8%,and GDP per capita 50292 R.M.B. Yuan; The fiscal revenue 4.81 billion R.M.B. Yuan, including 2.50 billion local revenue, increased by 14.3% and 22.3%; The social fixed asset investment totaled 21.62 billion R.M.B. Yuan, increased by 30.8%. A couple of new civil projects have put into operation with a total investment of 1.29 billion R.M.B. Yuan, including Beilun Administrative Center, Sports & Arts Center, Business Center, Central Square and etc. The annual average disposable income for residents and farmers per capita reached 17408 R.M.B.
